Marrakech “Red City” is the most important former imperial city in Morocco’s history. It is situated on the foothills of Atlas Mountains, which we will drive through for miles enjoying the fascinating presence of superb and scattered Berber villages. Almost half way we will pass by the Universal heritage of Ait Ben Hadou Kasbah, a fortified village of the 11th century. 35km away from Ait Ben Hadou Kasbah we will visit Africa´s Hollywood, Ouarzazate, where the biggest film studios are. The journey will go on along the longest valley all over the kingdom, 1052Km, and the biggest palm tree oasis. Arriving to Zagora where the remains of an Almoravid fortress can still be seen. Night and dinner at our Hotel.
We pass by Tamagrout which is situated along Draa River. In this small town we will visit one of the oldest libraries of the kingdom. We drive along Draa valley to M’hamid, a very modest village similar to the one we visited before this one. From a vast plateau you will get impressed by the huge sand dune of Chigaga appearing from the horizon,where we go for a camel ride to meet one of the most fascinating sand dunes sights you will ever see, the superb sunset in the middle of the high sand dune. This night we stay in a Berber camp and enjoy a wonderful stars view.
From Erg Chigaga we drive through sand dunes along a peaceful and fascinating wilderness passing by the natural dried lake of Iriki. 30 years ago this lake was full of water and different kinds of birds. After a long way driving an off-road, we get into the paved road and pass the small town of Foum-Zguid, which is a noiseless and a sleepy Berber town. We stopover in Taznakht, which was a former trading post for this large region.This little Berber village is one of the biggest carpets center in the kingdom. From Taznakht we drive for almost 90 Km, along quite oases and plenty of Berber villages; to get to the junction in between Marrakech and Ouarzazate, We cross the High Atlas Mountains again to return back to Marrakech.
